A Day in Edirne: The Ottoman Capital of Taste and Time

We leave Istanbul early and start the day with a picnic breakfast in Karaağaç on the banks of the Meriç. After the Lausanne Monument, the historic railway station and the Meriç Bridge, we visit the Bayezid II Complex.

In the afternoon, in central Edirne, we see the Old Mosque and the Üç Şerefeli Mosque, then the newly restored Selimiye, which Sinan considered his masterpiece, with time for shopping in the Arasta.

On festival day in May, the tour continues to Sarayiçi, the historic Kırkpınar wrestling grounds, to welcome spring around the Kakava bonfire with music, dancing and fire-jumping. Hıdrellez has been on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2017.
