Architectural Discovery II: Galata from Tünel to Karaköy

The second Architectural Discovery walk takes us from Tünel down the slopes of Galata to the Golden Horn. We read the architecture of the buildings along the way, and talk about who designed them, who first owned them and the lives lived inside.

From the Galata Mevlevi Lodge and Galip Dede Street to the apartment blocks of Serdar-ı Ekrem Street, from Galata Tower down Lüleci Hendek, one of the city’s loveliest streets, to Tophane. On Mumhane Street, the mirror of Karaköy’s changing face, we see the rooftop Russian churches and the Turkish Orthodox Patriarchate; on Bankalar Street, the old financial heart of the empire, the Camondo Stairs, the Schneidertempel Synagogue and the remains of Genoese Galata.

Through the streets of Perşembe Pazarı we reach the Arap Mosque, the remains of the Galata walls at Azapkapı and the Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque, then walk along the Karaköy quay to the artists’ studios of Kurşunlu Han and finish at the Karaköy fish market.
