Aya Yorgi Church – Büyükada
To reach this church, which was built in 1751 on Büyükada, you need to climb a steep hill. The church, one of the two pilgrimage sites for Orthodox Christians, is located at an elevation of 204 meters above sea level.
Hızır İlyas Hill – Büyükada
If you’re not afraid to walk uphill, you can enjoy another magnificent view of Büyükada from Hızır İlyas Hill. This location is less crowded and quieter than Aya Yorgi.
You can visit Adakule, a fire tower located on Hızır İlyas Hill. From the tower, you can have a panoramic view of Büyükada and a large part of the Marmara Sea. The tower is also suitable for birdwatching and hosting meetings and events.
Büyükada Greek Orphanage – Büyükada
Located on the Monastery Hill and completed as a hotel in 1899, this building has been used for various purposes, including an orphanage. The most significant feature of the building is that it is the largest wooden building in Europe and the second-largest in the world.
Greek Orthodox Seminary – Heybeliada
Established in 1844 on Heybeliada, the school is located on the Ümit Hill in the northwest of the island. Closed in 1971, the school, one of the first in this area, is still a subject of debate regarding whether it will be reopened.
Heybeliada Windmill (Değirmen) Hill – Heybeliada
Named after an old windmill located here, the hill is also known as Değirmen Burnu or Aşıklar Hill. Değirmen Hill, one of the four hills on the island, offers a stunning view.
Aya Yani Church – Burgazada
The first church on the site of this church was built by Empress Theodora, the wife of Emperor Theophilus (829-842), on top of the cell where the famous clergyman Methodius was imprisoned when exiled to Burgazada. The current church, built in 1899, features remarkable wooden craftsmanship.
Sait Faik Abasıyanık Museum – Burgazada
You can visit the house of Sait Faik, which was transformed into a museum after his death, for free on Burgazada. Established in 1959, the museum played a pioneering role in this field.
